Influencer Joe Muchiri recently visited his friend Jowie Irungu at the Kamiti Maximum Prison where he is serving his death sentence.

He provided updates on Irungu’s prison life through his social media, showing that despite the situation, he is managing well.

“Kijana ako sawa, ana pambana tu na amewasalimia,” he wrote on his Instagram stories.

Contrary to popular belief, death penalty convicts have visitation rights and can have both friends and family visit.

Infact, there are open days when families can visit the prisons and hang out with the those on death row.

The Kenyan Prison system does not segregate inmates serving death sentences, as it encourages integration with other inmates and they are encouraged to continue with their education and attain technical skills.

Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu was handed the death sentence on March 13, 2024, for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

In February, Justice Grace Nzioka determined that the prosecution had established Jowie’s guilt in Monica’s murder beyond a reasonable doubt. He was subsequently sentenced on March 13.

“Taking into account all I have said, therefore, I order that the first accused, Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie, is sentenced to hang as prescribed for the offense of murder under section 204 of the Kenyan Penal Code unless the sentence is set aside by a court of competent jurisdiction,” Judge Nzioka said.

Monica Kimani was brutally killed on the night of September 19, 2018, at her Lamuria Gardens apartment in Nairobi.

Jowie later filed a notice to appeal against his conviction and death sentence pending hearing.
