Sonko was running for the Makadara parliamentary seat and offered Raila the money so that he is pitted against Reuben Ndolo in ODM’s primaries.
However, the former governor was stunned when he learnt that Ndolo was later offered a direct nomination ticket by ODM.
“Fidel Odinga and Mama Ida really wanted me to become the MP for Makadara. They introduced me to Raila and beacuse he was from hospital at the time, I raised Ksh 7 million and took it to him
“I gave him the money and asked to content against Reuben Ndolo for the nomination ticket towhjch he agreed. However, after two hours, Ndolo visited Raila and I heard he was given a direct ticket,” Sonko shared.
This move forced Sonko to make last minute decisions and look for another party ahead of the general elections.
Despite losing his money, he clarified that he has already forgiven Raila and that they are on good terms at the time of the interview.
This is not the first time Sonko is lamenting against Raila, in August 2023, Sonko claimed that Raila betrayed him despite the many favours he did for him.
Speaking in a past event, Sonko said Raila had requested him to get jobs for some members of his family which he did.
He cited the example of Beryl Odinga, whom he said he employed as the chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company Board.
“I appointed Odinga’s sister as the chairperson of Nairobi Water, I went ahead and appointed his cousin as the chairperson of Mbagathi Hospital board. I gave a number of people linked to him the lucrative positions of chief officers,” he said.
Sonko further claimed that Raila also requested him to dig a borehole in his house, and a number of boreholes for some private families.
Sonko said that when he fell out of favour with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, it is Raila who dealt the final blow to his political career.
“Despite all the favours I did for him, he still worked with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ensured that I am impeached as the governor of Nairobi,” he said.
