Giant Chinese retailer China Square is launching a third store in Nairobi’s Langata area as it pursues expansion in Kenya.

The megastore set to cost Kshs 600 million will be leasing a branch owned by Uchumi Supermarkets on Langata Link Road, with renovations underway to give it a modern look.

With two other stores within Kenyatta University Unicity Mall and the Waterfront Mall in Karen, China Square is aiming to grow its reach in Kenya, targeting major cities throughout the country.

The Langata Hyper Branch will be opening its doors to customers on June 15th 2024.

“The isles are long and the shelves are full!! We can’t wait to have you on June 15th! Save the date and join us on our official opening date, June 15th 2024! Tag someone who lives in and around Langata and let them know! ,” a post shared on its social media account read.

The Chinese retailer is famed for its affordable prices and a wide array of items including beauty products, clothing, furniture, electronics, kitchenware and other household goods.

China Square’s move to expand to Langata is an indication that business for international retailers is booming as they carve their niche as suppliers of durable goods.

Currently, the mega-retailer competes with Panda Mart, a retail chain store with a presence in more than 12 countries in Africa.

Panda Mart was launched in January 2024, and in a similar style has shied away from fast-moving consumer goods, only stocking furniture, hardware, homeware and electronic appliances.

Panda Mart located at Garden City Mall along Thika Super Highway, is also eyeing to add four more outlets in major cities namely Kisumu, Eldoret and Mombasa.
