According to sources privy to the matter, the motion to out Gachagua could be presented to Parliament as soon as next week.
In response to this, over 50 lawmakers from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wiper Party and various Independent parties convened on Monday night to strategize against Gachagua’s potential removal.
During this meeting, the MPs are said to have committed to safeguarding the Deputy President from the impending impeachment efforts.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba remarked that the authority to impeach the Deputy President ultimately resides with the electorate.
“Gachagua can only be impeached by the electorate. It is the Kenyan people who have the authority of giving individual power and even withdrawing the power from them,” she noted.
The purported initiative to impeach the deputy president arises just a week after over 48 legislators from the Mt Kenya region voiced their backing for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
During a press conference on September 12, the MPs charged Rigathi Gachagua with fostering discord within Mt Kenya, which they argued obstructed the region’s progress.
Additionally, the caucus identified Kindiki as their conduit to President William Ruto, especially concerning developmental issues.
“Given the prevailing state of affairs and the urgency of the mission ahead, there is a need to have a link that will create a nexus between us and the National Executive on matters of development
“We unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, whose responsibilities include the coordination of National Government functions across the country,” the MPs said.
