Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has expressed skepticism regarding the recent trend of Mt Kenya MPs pledging their support to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
He suggested that this movement may be a strategy to marginalize Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from the political landscape. READ FULL STORY
Speaking in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, Thang’wa raised concerns that the MPs might be planning to impeach the Deputy President and levy charges against him in order to redistribute political positions among themselves.
He stood in defense of Gachagua, asserting that he would continue to serve as the political representative of the region.
“It is their plan to unite, bring an impeachment motion, remove him from office, jail him and give positions to other people
“Let me tell them, we are the ones who voted for Gachagua as the mountain and we will not allow anyone to touch him,” he added.
Thang’wa warned Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to exercise caution when accepting such support, citing the recent instance where MPs from Mt Kenya endorsed Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as the leading figure, only to subsequently abandon him.
“Those people who are backing you right now, they did so with Ndindi Nyoro. They raised him on a pedestal and took him round the country only to leave him falling. He is still picking himself up and dusting himself off. They will also lift you up and praise you and in the end, you’ll be the one left apologising to people
He went on, “When you see parliamentarians who are given an opportunity to serve, uniting to say that if we want to speak to the president it will be through this person, that’s an abdication of duty, lack of responsibility and a vote of no confidence to the people that lead them.”
Notably, recent tensions among Mt. Kenya MPs have led to a significant shift in support away from DP Gachagua.
During a meeting in Eldoret, led by Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, several MPs criticized Gachagua for allegedly undermining President William Ruto and called for a united front within the region.
They urged Gachagua to adapt to the new political dynamics and stop what they termed as backstabbing Ruto.
The dissent stems from various grievances against Gachagua, including accusations of being dictatorial and failing to assert his authority within the region.
Some MPs have expressed that Gachagua’s leadership style has alienated allies, with calls for him to step aside as the region’s representative.
This internal conflict highlights a growing rift in Mt. Kenya politics, with factions emerging that challenge Gachagua’s position and advocate for a more collaborative approach among leaders to ensure regional unity and development.
