According to reports, the mother of three killed her children using a metallic object before hanging herself in the incident that happened on Saturday.
Cherono is survived by her eldest son who was in Kericho at the time his siblings and ultimately her mother met their deaths.
The mother and her two children were at Cherono’s brother, David Bett’s house alone when the incident occurred.
“I was away in Kericho and my wife had gone to visit my in-laws, leaving my sister at home. She did not show any signs of depression as I had spoken with her on the phone a day prior to the incident,” Bett said.
Bett who works in Kericho said when he made his way to Bomet, he went directly to church for the Saturday service hoping to meet his entire family there.
It was during the church service when he was informed ofthe incident forcing him to rush home where he found people gathered at his home.
“I don’t know if I would have arrived and saved them if I had gone home straight instead of heading to the church,” Bett added.
According to Bett, his sister has been battling depression since 2015.
“Lorna had on and off bouts of depression that had persisted but she didn’t exhibit any signs of sickness prior to the incident
“Even during such times, she had not shown any suicidal tendencies. The murder and suicide has come as a shocker to all of us,” Bett told reporters.
Kenya faces significant challenges regarding suicide rates, with estimates suggesting a rate of approximately 6.5 to 11 per 100,000 people.
Reports indicate that between 2008 and 2017, suicides rose by 58%, with men disproportionately affected.
In recent months, the country has seen a spike, with 483 suicides reported in just three months prior to June 2023, highlighting a growing crisis exacerbated by economic hardships and stigma surrounding mental health.
Efforts are underway to decriminalize attempted suicide and improve mental health support systems.
