The Ministry has advised the public and essential service providers to implement necessary precautions.
“Healthcare workers, persons in close contact with confirmed cases, and those with multiple séxual partners have a higher chance of getting infected. Take necessary precautions and protect yourself from Mpox,” the ministry said in a circular.
This announcement follows the recent statement by Principal Secretary of Public Health and Standards, Mary Muthoni, indicating that the nation has enhanced its surveillance systems across all 47 counties.
She mentioned that border points have been prioritised in this exercise in order to prevent further transmission of Mpox.
Muthoni also noted that East African nations are making significant progress in developing data-sharing frameworks.
This is following a signing of a memorandum of understanding among the neighboring countries, which will be essential in addressing Mpox before it disseminates to other regions of the country.
“Kenya has very strong disease surveillance across the 47 counties at all entry points. We are also sensitizing the masses on what they need to do to prevent Mpox
“Cross-border information sharing exists between Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and the neighbouring countries. Efforts are underway to establish formal cross-border data and information sharing,” she said.
Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent mpox.
The JYNNEOS vaccine is recommended for individuals at risk, and it is important to receive both doses for optimal protection, administered four weeks apart.
Additionally, avoiding close contact with individuals who exhibit a rash resembling mpox is crucial.
This includes refraining from kissing, hugging, cuddling, or engaging in sexual activities with someone who has mpox.
In areas where mpox is endemic, it is advisable to avoid contact with animals that may carry the monkeypox virus, such as rodents and primates.
It is important to avoid sharing personal items that could be contaminated.
This includes not sharing eating utensils, cups, bedding, towels, or clothing with someone who has mpox.
Further, it is important to practice good hygiene as it is another vital preventive measure.
Regularly washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is important, especially before eating, touching your face, and after using the bathroom.
