CNN journalist Larry Madowo recently interacted with Kenyan police officers at their camp in Haiti where they are on a mission.
Approximately 200 Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti on June 25, 2024, to support a UN-backed mission aimed at combating rampant gang violence that has destabilized the country. READ FULL STORY
This deployment, part of the Multinational Security Support Mission, seeks to assist Haiti’s under-resourced police in restoring order, as gangs control over 80% of Port-au-Prince, displacing hundreds of thousands and exacerbating a humanitarian crisis.
Madowo spent days in the country and shared a meal with the officers on Saturday.
In a video that he shared on his X account, the journalist could be seen sitting in a room full of officers enjoying their meals.
Madowo and the rest of the officers were having some mixed vegetables, rice, beans, chicken and some salad for lunch.
“This is where the Kenyan officers eat,” he said in the video that he also shared on his TikTok account.
All workers in the base also eat with the Kenyan security officers.
As earlier reported on EAFeed, reports have shown that Kenyan police personnel working for the United Nations-backed mission in Haiti can earn up to KSh 279,955 per month, including allowances.
The international agency pays each officer a base salary of Ksh 182,242, with various allowances that greatly increase their profits.
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Thursday, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, nominee for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, revealed that the United Nations caters for the officers stationed in Haiti.
“Our officers are covered, insured, and paid by the United Nations, so there is no cause for alarm,” Kindiki said.
The police make $1,410 each month, equivalent to around Ksh 183,140.
This compensation system, agreed by the UN General Assembly in June 2014, has undergone incremental changes over time.
In addition to their base wage, officers get a Mission Subsistence Allowance (MSA) of $756, which increases their monthly income by Ksh 99,916.
