Hassan’s experience exemplifies the impact of innovation and perseverance in small business ventures.
He established his chapati enterprise, Jitume Fast Foods, in 2023 after moving from Mtwapa, Mombasa.
What began as a single location has now grown to encompass two additional outlets in the vicinity, providing employment for nine young individuals.
His business has rapidly garnered a substantial customer base, attributed to his competitive pricing, prompt service, and the delectable, soft chapatis that ensure customer loyalty.
A significant innovation that distinguishes Hassan from other chapati vendors is his custom-designed frying pan.
Unlike the conventional pans utilized by his competitors, Hassan’s pan is a hybrid of a frying pan and a gas stove.
This distinctive design enables him to prepare up to 18 chapatis at once, greatly enhancing his production capacity while also conserving cooking gas.
“This pan is a game changer for me. It’s like the ones used in burger joints, but mine is specially designed for chapatis,” he said.
This advancement has allowed him to increase his production from two 2KG packets of flour each day to more than 24 packets daily, resulting in nearly 700 chapatis produced every day.
In addition to his innovative frying pan, Hassan has implemented various measures to guarantee the superior quality of his chapatis.
Each chapati is priced at Ksh 20, and to ensure optimal temperature, he utilizes a cooler that keeps the chapatis warm and fresh until they are served.
Moreover, in contrast to many street vendors who operate under makeshift umbrella shades, Hassan has established a small, tidy setup that enables him to work effectively in any weather conditions.
“Cleanliness is key in this business. My customers trust me because they know I prioritise hygiene,” he said.
In spite of his achievements, Hassan encounters difficulties, especially regarding personnel.
Furthermore, the increasing expenses associated with goods and services have affected his enterprise, complicating efforts to maintain growth.
