Jowie Irungu’s dad Julius Mwangi Irungu who passed away on Sunday, June 16 was distraught in the days leading up to his demise, asking to see his son one last time.
Mwangi is said to have succumbed to cancer at the age of 64, leaving behind a widower and four children including Jowie who is currently serving a death sentence at the Kamiti Maximum Prison for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. READ FULL STORY
He died at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital Annex.
According to the family, he was to be transported to Nairobi for treatment, after which he deteriorated forcing them to take him to the Nakuru Level Five Hospital as a last resort to save his life.
On his deathbed, Mwangi requested to see his son claiming that he had seen media reports saying that Jowie was a free man and was persistent that he be taken to the prisons to see him.
“He told us that he had seen media reports that his son had been released. He insisted on being taken to the prisons and we had arranged to take him there before his condition deteriorated,” one of his daughters said.
His condition would get worse a few hours later and he passed on before his dying wish was fulfilled.
Mwangi’s last days were full of remorse, and according to his daughter, he wept over his son’s conviction, and the anguish contributed sharply to his failing health.
He had maintained that his son was a victim and that someone had pinned Ms Kimani’s murder on him.
“My son was unfairly tried and convicted; they made sure the world was against him and now they want to kill him,” he said in a past interview with the Nation.
Jowie’s family is still in mourning and funeral arrangements are yet to begin.
