Peter Gatirau Munya is the current Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya. He is also a lawyer, an advocate and a lecturer by profession.

Peter Munya Education background
He went to Chogoria Boys High School for his ‘O’ levels and to Meru School for his ‘A’ levels. He then went to the University of Nairobi to pursue a bachelor’s Degree in Law. He graduated from University of Nairobi in 1993 with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree 2nd class honors lower division.
He took up an internship at Kamau Kuria and Kiraitu Advocates in Nairobi, after which in January 1995, he went to the University of Brussels, Belgium on a Belgian Embassy scholarship where he got a master’s degree in International law (International Economic Integration Law). He then went to the University of Georgia where he attended his 2nd master’s degree in Law (Public International Law).
Peter Munya Politics and Career Journey
His first foot into politics was in 2003 when he became the Member of Parliament of Tigania East Constituency. He remained in office in this position for 10years, that is till 2013. During this time, he also became the Assistant Minister of Internal Security and Provincial Administration (October 2006 – December 2007) and the Assistant Minister of East Africa Community (EAC) (April 2008- March 2013).

Elections came in and he was elected as the first Governor of Meru county on 27th March 2013. He was able to serve in this office till 18th August 2017.
He then worked as the Cabinet Secretary, East African Community and Northern Corridor Development Kenya from 16th February 2008 till 13th July 2018, after which he was elected as the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Kenya till 14th January, 2020.
On 14th January, 2020, he assumed office as the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Kenya. His political Party is Party of National Unity (PNU).

Recently, Peter Munya stated that the yellow locusts were not a threat to agriculture. He claimed that the yellow ones were weak and were not as dangerous as the black one. Many Kenyans refused to buy his theory, stating that locusts are harmful in whatever colour and form they are in.
