Mr. Makori was recruited by NMG as a reporter way back in 1993 at a time when the Daily Nation sports desk had been depleted by a mass exodus of journalists.
He thanked the company for the opportunity given to him and promised to mentor upcoming and talented young journalists.
“Whatever has a beginning certainly has an end,” Makori, the award-winning journalist, wrote to colleagues last evening. “The time has come for NMG and me to part ways with deep, mutual gratitude. From Friday, June 14, I will be making my exit from Nation Centre.”
He further continued by saying: “I’m extremely proud and humbled to have given my 32 years of dedicated, uninterrupted, unequivocal service to this great organization,” he said in his note. “I will remain indebted to NMG for shaping my professional career and will certainly be happy to share my experience and offer mentorship at NMG – which will always remain my home – and beyond.”
He urged his colleagues to remain resilient and hopeful during these challenging times for the company.
He referenced Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 to highlight that there is a time for everything, signaling both an end and a new beginning.
Makori joined NMG on January 23, 1993, as a sports reporter, rising through the ranks over the years.
In 2012, he was crowned as the World Journalist of the Year in Barcelona, Spain by World Athletics President Seb Coe.
Throughout his journalism career, Makori, who was named NMG Employee of the Year twice in 1998 and 2012, has covered major sports events including the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, World Athletics Championships, World Volleyball Championship, Cricket World Cup, World Athletics Championship, multiple big City Marathons, among others.
