With a total of 47 counties, even with devolved government being put in place, Kenya is yet to achieve its desired balanced regional development. This has mainly been affected by the fact that some counties are naturally well endowed than others. Factors such as corruption and misappropriation of funds also affect a county’s wealth. With that said, check out the top 10 poorest counties in Kenya as stated below:

1. Mandera County

With a current GDP per Capita of Kshs. 26,700, Mandera stands as the poorest county in Kenya at the moment. The area barely supports any agriculture and education is not prioritized by the locals. The area also gets affected by terror attacks when the Al Shabab strike.

2. Bomet County

Bomet county is the second poorest county in Kenya at the moment. It has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 28,200.

3. Elgeyo Marakwet County

Elgeyo Marakwet county sits third on this list as the third poorest county in Kenya. The county has a GDP per capita of about Kshs. 29,600.

4. Samburu County

The 4th poorest county in Kenya at the moment is Samburu county which has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 29,880.

5. West Pokot County

West Pokot county is the 5th poorest county in Kenya at the moment. It has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 30,800.

6. Migori County

The Migori county governor 2017-2022 is his Excellency Okoth Obado. The county has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 31,500. It comes 6th on this list.

7. Turkana County

Despite it having one of the highest budgets, Turkana county still makes it on this list. The area is mostly dry, barely supporting any vegetation, forcing locals to buy food from other places in the country. Most people are under educated and starvation and poverty is always on the rise. Its GDP per Capita is Kshs. 31,700.

8. Busia County

Despite it being able to support agriculture, Busia county is still among the poorest counties in Kenya. The county has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 32,000.

9. Baringo County

Baringo county is currently the 9th  among the poorest counties in Kenya. It has a GDP per Capita of Kshs. 32,200.

10. Homabay County

Homabay County is the 10th poorest county in Kenya at the moment. The county has a GDP per capita of Kshs. 32,500.
