It was a dark night on Wednesday, August 21 for Kawira Mwangaza after she lost her Meru Governor’s seat.
26 senators voted to uphold the first charge of gross violation of the constitution and other laws.
14 senators abstained while four voted in her support
In the second charge on gross misconduct, 26 senators voted in favour of her impeachment, two against, while 14 others abstained.
27 senators upheld the charge of abuse of office, one voted against and 14 abstained.
“The Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County, and the Governor accordingly ceases to hold office,” Speaker Amason Kingi said.
Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached for the third time by the Meru County Assembly.
The impeachment is on charges of abuse of office, gross misconduct and gross violation of the Constitution.
During the impeachment hearing, 40 out of 69 members of the county assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of the impeachment motion.
The motion was tabled by Deputy Majority Party Leader Zipporah Kinya, meeting the two-thirds threshold.
17 MCAs voted against the impeachment motion, while three did not vote.
The three MCAs failed to avail themselves at the assembly for the impeachment vote.
Mwangaza will now await the Senate’s decision to know if the house will save her or remove her.
