In December 2014, Major Otongo’s heroism was brought to national attention during a critical airstrike operation.
He played a key role in a mission that resulted in the neutralization of 89 Al-Shabaab terrorists, significantly weakening the group’s operational capabilities. This operation was crucial in Kenya’s ongoing battle against terrorism.
The mission, however, was fraught with challenges. During the operation, Major Otongo faced critical technical malfunctions in his Northrop F-5 Tiger II aircraft.
Despite these difficulties, he demonstrated remarkable courage and chose to continue with the mission. His tactical skill and unwavering commitment led him to execute a second airstrike on a target known as Araara.
Tragically, shortly after this second strike, his aircraft crashed due to avionics and engine failures.
It is believed that he ejected before the crash, but rescue efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. The KDF rejected claims from Al-Shabaab that they had captured him, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding his fate.
The crash represented a profound loss for the KDF, yet Major Otongo’s legacy of bravery and sacrifice continues to inspire many.
In the wake of the incident, the Kenya Air Force established the Rapid Deployment Unit at Laikipia Airbase to enhance the rescue capabilities for stranded airmen.
In recognition of his valor and significant contributions to the nation, Major Otongo was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015. His dedication to duty and exemplary service remain a testament to the courage of the men and women in uniform.
