The political world came calling in 1992 when he took up a parliamentary seat for two consecutive terms and later took up the role of Minister of Trade and Industry for five years since 2002. He was an indispensable character in parliament leading several international negotiations, collaborations and partnerships such as the European Union-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations.
His contribution to the African leadership has been immense since 2008 when he was part of the advisory committee tasked to advise EAC presidents on establishing effective international economic links. He was a consultant to the African Union Commission on creating an open trading space for African nations.
Mukhisa Kituyi’s brilliance was further implemented in his leadership of the Kenya Institute of Governance which brings up scholarly research findings and channel their implementation in developing public policy. After his role at the institute, he then went to the UN serving as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD between 2013 and 2021 before his bid announcement. He seeks to bring change in governance of the country and streamline system structures in Kenya.

Mukhisa is married to a Norwegian lady, Ling Kituyi who is currently the Head of Staff Health and Well Being at UNHCR in Switzerland. The couple has four children, the late Ivar Makari Kituyi, Sitati Kituyi, Laila Mayilila and Thor Masasule. The late Ivar Kituyi succumbed to a diabetic attack in 2015. His family is of scholars and all are exemplary performers in their academics and career choices. Mukhisa is also a grandfather.
