Rigathi Gachagua DCI Ordeal

The Member of Parliament representing the people of Mathira was arrested on Friday in Nyeri. He was afterwards grilled for several houses, denied bond, and locked up in the Gigiri Police Station awaiting Monday when he will be charged on five identified counts. 

The counts against him are all corruption cases involving huge sums of money. Gachagua is charged with laundering in excess of Kshh 100,000,000 from the county government of Bungoma and attempts to defraud Nyeri County Ksh 35,000,000. Additionally, he is alleged to have had an unexplainable Ksh 7 billion deposited into his account and irregularities with the CDF in Mathira. 

Other political leaders allied to the Deputy President and members of the UDA party arrived at the DCI demanding Gachagua’s unconditional release. These included Gladys Boss Shollei, Christopher Lang’at, Dennis Itumbi, Kimani Ichung’wa, and Irung’u Kang’ata along with Gachagua’s lawyer Gikonyo Wahome. They described this as a State-based attack claiming that the counts were fabricated and false. The leaders questioned the authenticity of these claims questioning why it would come just after the Kiambaa by-election.
