Fernandes Barasa is a Kenyan politician and the new Kakamega county governor-elect. He garnered a total of 192,929 votes, defeating his closest competitor Cleophas Malala from ANC party who gained 159,508 votes.
Barasa was born and raised in Khabondi village, Mumias East constituency in Kakamega county. There are no further details on his family and date of birth.
For his secondary school education, Barasa attended Naitiri high school where he sat for his national examinations. He later proceeded to Kenyatta University where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Business Administration, and Ph.D. in Accounting and Finance degrees.
Fernandes Barasa is a Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA) and former chairman of the prestigious Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. He also worked as the managing director and chief executive officer at Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).
In the August 2022 general election, Barasa was among those eyeing the Kakamega gubernatorial seat. He contested under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket and managed to get a total of 192,929 votes, emerging as the winner.
Barasa cast his vote at Bulimbo primary polling station in Matungu constituency. He shared that he had witnessed rampant voter bribery in many polling stations in Matungu constituency which he alleges to be by his opponents.
“I have inspected various polling centers in Matungu and there is a lot of voter bribery which in my opinion is an election offense and I want to urge IEBC and all the security agencies to make sure they take action so that people can vote freely without intimidation,” said Barasa.
The politician is married to Prof. Janet Kasilly Barasa, and together they have four children.
