Willy Mutunga served as Kenya’s Chief Justice between 2011 and 2016. He led the Supreme Court bench that heard and determined the 2013 elections petition by ODM Leader Raila Odinga challenging the win of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mutunga managed to lead two separate lives during his tenure as CJ, keeping his family aware from the glare of the media. His two most popular children are Wallimohammed ‘Al-Amin’ Mohammed and Shamilla Mutunga.
Wallimohammed ‘Al-Amin’ Mohammed was named after Mutunga’s friend, late academic and scholar Al Amin Mazroui.
From a young age, Al Amin developed an interest in photography and videography.
Being the son of the Chief Justice, many would assume he would follow in his father’s footsteps. In a 2019 interview with the Standard, AL Amin revealed that their father encouraged them to pursue whichever career they wanted.
Al Amin attended the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and graduated with a degree i Business Information Technology.
He had a stint at non-profit Pawa 254 immediately after completing his studies.
Al Amin has over the years built a reputation for himself among peers in the country. He was among the panelists that darfted talent when Canon Europe organised a workshop in Kenya led by renowned photojournalist and Canon Master Gary Knight.
