The favorable climate in the continent provides a suitable learning environment for students throughout the year. The continent also has a wide variety of phenomena to be researched and investigated in providing solutions that will be of tremendous benefit to the entire world.

A classic interpretation of “When the world gives you lemons, make some lemonade” is true for Africa when students consider the problems riddling their home and working towards providing answers that alleviate these problems and benefit the world altogether. An example is the HIV/AIDS disease. This disease has singly claimed the lives of more than 470,000 Africans and 32 million people globally.

African universities should be at the forefront in addressing this issue by carrying out further intensive studies and eventually arrive at an effective vaccine saving the lives of millions of people, easen the virus’ economic burden and generally contribute a milestone in humanity.

The Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2020 recently released its annual ranking. The rankings are compiled following a set procedure in determining their positions. The investigation looks at the surroundings of the entire learning process.

Surveys are carried out to determine aspects such as the number of staff members in relation to the number of students on campus and the number of post graduate students in comparison to the graduate students. For example, a balanced-out ratio of staffing to the learners contributes to a better ranking.

Investigation also assesses the University’s research volume, income and the reputation of resulting findings. Papers published by the students such as proposals, term papers and projects are critically studied to assess how credible their findings are and how much contribution they make.

Citations generally look into the impact of a production to the entire education system. Universities are assessed by how much of their findings are accepted and applied by other institutions and information users. The uniqueness and the amount of area covered by the dissemination of new ideas is what counts in this assessment.

The world is now a global village and even universities are looked at being ambassadors of the same concept. A university is assessed by its ability to attract and retain different populations from across the globe. A university with a suitable environment for international students scores higher.

Institutions are also assessed by their ability to bring to the table meaningful and necessary inputs. It also looks at the readiness of the outside businesses and general economy to invest in the university’s research on such matters.
