Mayanja N. Rachael was born in the year 1st January 1948 in Uganda. She currently serves as the United Nations secretary general’s special adviser on women matters. She was mentioned as being among the top influential and powerful women in Africa.

Education and Career

Rachael Mayanja got her first degree (Bachelor of Laws LLB) from Makerere university, she also studied at law development center where she obtained a diploma in legal practice. She advanced her studies at Harvard university where she obtained master of laws degree.

Work and experience

She is currently A United Nations employee. She joined the UN from 19th June 1975 up to 2nd July 1975 serving as a special assistant to the assistant secretary general for social development and humanitarian affairs.

Still in the united nations, Mayanja served for one year (1989 to 1990) on a peacekeeping mission to Namibia (UNTAG). Her work was to oversee the elections leading to independence.

Between 1992 to 1994, she was sent on a un mission to Iraq/Kuwait to provide administrative support to the observer mission.

Between 1995 to 1999 in the United Nations, she got senior positions in the offices of human resource management which included chief, common system and specialist service. This post dealt with salaries, entitlements, appeals and disciplinary cases.

In 1999, she was given a task by the United Nations to act as a secretary to UN’s general task force in Human resource management department. She also worked in 2000, in Food and Agriculture (FAO) in the position of the director, Human resource management division
